Free survival game

Midnight Horrors is a frightfully sophisticated free survival game for Roblox by CaptainSpinxs. At first glance, you can see that this is a horror game that is fairly popular in terms of active players. In total, the game has been played over 11.9 million times since its creation in 2019. The description for Midnight Horrors features a warning of flashing lights and loud sounds, which means this game is unsuitable for people suffering from epilepsy or those opposed to loud sounds and flashing visuals.

Why stick to a singular Android or PC game when you can play on a platform that inherently contains millions of fan-made experiences? Roblox is such a platform. The platform features such diversity that within the space of a few seconds, you can transition from a hardcore game like Zombie High School to a simple puzzle like Don’t Press the Button 4

Survival

Midnight Horrors is a take on the classic horror survival trope in which you’ll need to survive various killers during each level. You’ll need to survive each killer for two minutes to score the most points. The killers are chosen at random.

Multiplayer

Co-operative gameplay is often the most popular format, and with games like Midnight Horrors, you can see why. Midnight Horrors doesn’t pit players against each other, but instead sees players working together to achieve a common goal. The most pressing goal is, of course, to survive the killers’ attacks, but sometimes players can band together and disable a killer - provided the killer in question is of the weaker variety.

Killers

Midnight Horrors has quite an extensive pool of killers from which to choose an antagonist for each level. While most of the killers are original characters, you may encounter a few that you’ve seen in other games or popular culture references.

Included amongst this star-studded cast of baddies is none other than Freddy Fazbear himself, the titular big bad antagonist from Five Nights at Freddy’s. You’ll also see characters like The Sun, which glitches as it chases you down and is accompanied by similarly glitchy music, and Agony, an all-around terrifying guy.

Not actually a horror

Even though this review states that Midnight Horrors is a horror game for Roblox, the official game page on the platform says otherwise. The developer explicitly states that Midnight Horrors is not a horror game, and that it contains ‘tons of inside jokes, non-horror characters, and absolute chaos. The latter claims are true, but this revelation does call the nature of the game into question.

Instead of being a take on the classic horror survival trope, maybe Midnight Horror is an allegory of the capitalistic society within which we live that sends various ‘killers’ after us in the form of debt, stress, and the weight on our minds pertaining to our position in this seemingly crumbling society. Whatever Midnight Horrors is, it is bound to

entertain you for hours
